Film Review 1: Saltburn

This was the first film review that I did this year was over the film Saltburn, which was directed by Emerald Fennel. This film was extremely jarring to say the least. I appreciated the risks the director and the actors took to truly emphasize the depravity of certain characters. In the beginning of the film, Oliver Quick is conveyed, through the usage of mute colors and quiet demeanor, to be this socially awkward nerd; however, as the film progresses it becomes more apparent that Oliver is a threat to Saltburn, not the other way around.

This film gives whoever is watching all the feels, and when I say all the feels, I mean ALL the feels. One scene that stood out to me the most was the climax, Oliver’s birthday party which was thrown by his host family. The heavily saturated red coloring of this scene gave such an eerie vibe and added to the overall terror that was this scene. The film is disturbing in most aspects, but all of the disturbing aspects, I believe, were implanted for a legitimate reason, not just for explicitness’ sake. The director, Emerald Fennel main motivation for making this film was to critique our society for obsessing over wealth because it comes at a high price. I would encourage my viewers to watch this film; however, to proceed with caution because this film has some truly profane scenes that should not be taken lightly at all.
