Film Review II: One Love
This biopic of one of the most legendary musicians ever to exist, in my opinion, did a great job of depicting Bob Marley as not only an amazing musician, but also as a revolutionary. This film blended the aspects of Bob Marley’s life that we know well, but there were other surprising details about his life that I did not find out until I watched this film. My love and appreciation for Marley’s work grew after watching this film and I would encourage all to watch it as well. One of the reasons why I think this film was so successful in telling such a complex story is because Marley’s family played a huge role in the producing of this film.
One of my favorite aspects of this film was its score. My favorite scene in the entire film is when Marley sings “Turn Your Lights Down Low” for his wife. Not only is this my favorite song by Bob Marley, but it was also indicative of the love he had for his family. This film succeeded in blending the diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound which was a creative win in my opinion. This film incorporated Marley’s own music to tell the story of his life, the same way he did when he was alive. The love Marley had for his family and his community was really felt through the screen and I appreciated this a lot. I’ve heard other film blogger critique this film heavily because it lacked “authenticity”, but I think that these people missed the bigger picture: this was a film about highlighting a black icon who inspired millions of people and even an entire country to chose peace, not about picking the actor with the best Jamaican accent.
